My first self-designed website was created in 2003 using the simplest web design application available and I grasped it quite quickly. It cost me a tenner a year and I mastered it, until the Canadian bloke who developed it retired. So I found another app that was still simple yet much more complicated and it took me ages to create a simple website. Then the company that owned the web design app was bought out by a big company and because I’m shit at transferring domains and technical information, I stuck with it, so I now use Wix, which is one of the top easy to use web design apps going, apparently. Not for me it isn’t.
It had been more than a year since I last used Wix and I’d forgotten how most of it worked. My main memories of using it then was that I struggled and swore a lot.
This time I wanted it to work differently, meaning learning more stuff to forget, which I did a lot throughout the process. So I swore a lot more.
The graphic side of web design is easy for me because I can see what I want before it is created. The technical side is just one obstacle after another. Trying to understand stuff that I don’t understand and when I think I understand, it doesn’t bloody work. So I swear even more.
My missus puts up with my expletive laden frustration and occasionally offers shit advice on a subject she knows absolutely nothing about, which induces further profanity.
Tags, meta-tags, meta-data, SEOs, CSS, and CMS etc to headers, footers, sections, elements and all sorts of words that lead to another etc. I don’t know or remember what they mean or do and have to find out, re-find out and work out how and why they do it. Sometimes stuff happens without me doing anything. Things move, disappear or appear somewhere else where they shouldn’t. It does my head in. I often swear at the dog too.
Through trial, error, frustration and perseverance, I eventually achieve what I need, although never quite exactly what I want. Technology limits me.This website has taken a couple of months to design. My main objective has been simplicity, but tech doesn’t make things simple. I know I probably haven’t got absolutely everything in place perfectly, but I hope I have.
