And then...
Since 2018 life has been on a complete diversion away from our own lives and our attention has been fairly full on centred around our elderly parents. My mum was diagnosed with Alzheimers and I have been by her side since and before, doing pretty much everything for her that she’s unable to do herself anymore. Witnessing her independence become dependence and her mind become blank has been an exhausting expedition. Over four years she has moved home three times and been in hospital and respite several times. She is now in a nursing home, not even remembering her Hungarian language, but her smiles beam when she’s visited by Reg, our little Patterdale Terrier. He’s all she recognises these days. My wife has also become a more-or-less full-time carer for her parents who have also deteriorated quite rapidly since the lockdowns of 2020. Both were diagnosed with Dementia early in 2024.
