David Bowie

Bowie hit the limelight around the same time I began to take notice of popular music. I never became a fanatical follower, but his music traveled through life with me. His death was as much as shock to me as it was his millions of fans. He was the first of many to meet their end in 2016 and without doubt, the most iconic.

This portrait is my tribute. It was completed on January 10th 2017, the first anniversary of Bowie’s death.

Acrylics on 4 ft x 3 ft MDF, sanded, primed and pre-drilled in each corner for mounting.

Ironman

Comics were my path to reading, writing and drawing as a child. They were a part of my life from an early age and from the kiddies titles I progressed onto superheroes and graphic stories as I reached my first decade. I spent as much time drawing the characters as I did reading their exploits. I just loved the style of art and still do.

Ironman is a cool piece of original hand painted art that would look cracking on the wall of any lad's bedroom or bachelor pad.

Norman Wisdom

I grew up watching old black and white comedy films during the sixties and Norman Wisdom was one of my heroes. I just loved his slapstick, tomfoolery and crazy acrobatics. His humour wore off on me and I was often the classroom comedian during my school days. Norman Wisdom's early life was of tragedy and sadness, which he overcame with comedy.

Exhibiting a sadness beneath the clown, this pencil portrait was inspired by my favourite photo of Mr Wisdom.

Jaguar

I owned a Jaguar XJ6 a few years back. It was a lovely motor that just cruised and oozed class with its beautiful lines and purposeful stance. A testament to the once great British car industry. I still have a Jaguar bonnet mascot, mounted on a plinth and on display in our lounge. To me, it is a design masterpiece. A gleaming, sleek and powerful symbol of the product it represented.

I just had to paint it.

Waves

Derby is in the middle of England, I live as far from the coast as one can be, almost. When I do get to be beside the seaside though, the waves stimulate my mind.

Waves is inspired by a trip to Bude on the Cornish coast during the winter of 2015. My wife and I sat on the sea front on a stormy morning watching the wind whip up the sea in a wild dance of nature. With my camera in hand, I got a little closer than I should have really and my wife walked away, refusing to watch me risking my life. I was lost in the chaos, clicking away and feeling the natural power. Waves is a combination of reference, memory and a free hand.

Acrylics on large canvas. 100 x 80 cms (40 x 32 inches approx).

Tiger

There was no particular reason for painting a tiger. It was only my second ever painting on canvas, but my first in colour. I just wanted to paint something big and ‘in ya face’. If I do have a style, as such, it is simply to catch the eye.
